現代語訳
ある暮れの年の瀬、大晦日に餅代が必要になったが、一休は金を使い果たして、茶代の一文もない。どうしようかと、立売のあたりに立ち止まっていらっしゃったところ、日が暮れかかる頃、土器売りの商人の売上金が一貫文ほどあったのを、一休がやにわにその土器を「やれやれ」と言ってだまし取って、貧乏のために、
したたかに身をやつしていらっしゃったので、商人は弱い男で、「これはこれは」と慌てふためいて逃げて帰った。仕舞ったぞと背負い籠を締められた。
二、三日過ぎて河原に札を立てて「○○（文字不明）
一、この度無心を申して銭一貫文を借用いたし候。もはやこちらに金の準備ができましたので、右の銭を返済申したく候。受け取りに○○○（文字不明）あるべく候。以上

英語訳
One year-end on New Year's Eve, money was needed for rice cakes, but Ikkyu had spent all his money and didn't have even one mon for tea money. Wondering what to do, he was standing around the Tachiuri area when, as evening was approaching, he suddenly took the earthenware from a pottery merchant who had about one kan-mon in sales proceeds, saying "Oh my, oh my" and deceiving him. Due to his poverty,
he had become quite shabbily dressed, and the merchant, being a weak man, fled home in a panic saying "Oh dear, oh dear!" He secured his carrying basket on his back.
Two or three days later, he set up a notice board by the river: "[unclear characters]
One: This time I made a request for financial assistance and borrowed one kan-mon in cash. Now that I have prepared the money on this side, I would like to repay the aforementioned money. Someone should come to collect it [unclear characters]. The above.
