現代語訳
今はもう理太郎は十六歳になったので、元服をさせたところ、生まれつきも良く、良い男となった。そして店の商売向きも任せて世話をさせたところ、このように利口者なので、朝も早く起き、夜も遅く寝て、炊事万事に心を配り、倹約を基本として、親に孝行を尽くし、奉公人に憐れみをかけ、算盤を常に手放さず内外を守ったので、その近辺で評判の息子となった。

人の寝ている時は魂が遊びに出るということに間違いはない。理太郎十八歳の年、ある日、帳合いに疲れてうたた寝をした。あの魂は日々悪い魂を近づけまいと守っていることなので、少し疲れて、
理太郎のうたた寝を幸い、そこらへ遊びに出たが、例の悪魂は仲間を誘って来て、良い魂を縛り置き、後の体へ入った。

Now Ritaro had reached the age of sixteen, so he was given his coming-of-age ceremony (genpuku). Being naturally gifted, he became a handsome young man. When he was entrusted with managing the shop's business, being such an intelligent person, he would wake up early in the morning and go to bed late at night, paying attention to cooking and all household matters. Making frugality his foundation, he devoted himself to filial piety toward his parents and showed compassion to his servants. Always keeping his abacus at hand and protecting both the inner and outer affairs of the business, he became a renowned son in the neighborhood.

There is no doubt that when people sleep, their souls go out to play. In Ritaro's eighteenth year, one day he became tired from bookkeeping and took a nap. That soul, having been daily protecting against evil souls approaching, became somewhat exhausted.
Taking advantage of Ritaro's nap, it went out to play in the vicinity. The aforementioned evil soul brought along its companions, bound the good soul, and entered the remaining body.
