現代語訳
悪い魂は良いから疲れて女郎の懐に入り、すやすやと眠りに入ると同時に、理太郎はしきりに家のことが気にかかり、「俺はどうしてここへ来たのだろう。なぜこんな気持ちになったのだろう」と夢から覚めたような心地がして、何も言わずに帰ろうとした。しかし、この騒ぎに悪い魂が目を覚まして「帰してはならない」と、
早速理太郎の体に飛び込んだので、また心が変わり、ついに泊まると決まったところへ、あの良い魂が縄の戒めをやっとのことで引き切って一心に駆けつけ、手を取って連れ帰ろうとする。悪い魂は「そうはさせない」と引き止める。
理太郎が左に引かれる時は「ああ、いっそ泊まろうか」と言い、右に引っ張られる時は「いやいや、早く帰ろう」と言って、廊下を行ったり来たりして思案にくれている様子である。
魂の姿は凡夫の目には全く見えないので、茶屋の男は（理太郎が）けしからぬ振る舞いをする客だと思っている。

お帰りになるのも、いらっしゃるのも、なさりなさい。ばからしい。
【悪魂たちの台詞】
井戸替えというものだ。これ、腹を開いてしゃんとしなさい。

英語訳
The evil spirits, satisfied, grew tired and entered the courtesan's bosom, falling into a deep sleep. At the same time, Ritarō became deeply concerned about matters at home, wondering "How did I come to be here? Why have I come to feel this way?" With a feeling as if awakening from a dream, he tried to return home without saying a word. However, disturbed by this commotion, the evil spirits awakened and declared "We must not let him return."
They immediately leaped into Ritarō's body, so his heart changed again and he decided to stay after all. At that moment, the good spirit managed to cut through the restraining ropes and rushed over with single-minded determination, taking his hand to try to bring him home. The evil spirits resist, saying "We won't let that happen."
When Ritarō is pulled to the left, he says "Ah, perhaps I should stay after all," and when pulled to the right, he says "No, no, I should go home quickly," going back and forth in the corridor, lost in indecision.
Since the forms of the spirits are completely invisible to ordinary eyes, the tea house attendant thinks Ritarō is a customer behaving improperly.
