現代語訳
義経の弟子はもとより、その外剣術を学ぶ者は、観音の額を見て、とかく剣術は先生である牛若丸と言った、奮起して五条の橋にて千人斬りをなされたことのように、大勢を斬らねば上手にはなられぬことと思えども、人を斬っては公難を免れ難しと、毎晩五条の橋、柳の馬場、辻々、小路々へ出て、天気の良い夜に高足駄を履き、日の丸の扇を持ち、木刀あるいは竹刀にて往来の人を千人打ちをぞしたりける。

英語訳
The disciples of Yoshitsune, as well as others learning swordsmanship, seeing the Kannon votive plaques, thought that swordsmanship required a teacher like Ushiwakamaru, who in his fervor performed the "thousand-man killing" at Gojo Bridge. They believed that one cannot become skilled without cutting down many people, but since killing people would make it difficult to escape official punishment, every evening they went out to Gojo Bridge, the willow riding grounds, crossroads, and small streets. On nights with good weather, wearing high geta and carrying fans with the rising sun, they practiced "thousand-man striking" on passersby with wooden swords or bamboo swords.
