現代語訳
馬の稽古をする者は、小栗の判官鬼鹿毛の馬に乗りしを、駆け馬を乗りたると聞き違えその上弟子、当世木馬になっては日頃気合いを知っているので面白くなし。いかにも見ず知らずの者に乗ったらばいろいろの口向きがあるべしと、北野の天神の地内あるいは吉町へ馬具を持ち行き、駆け馬を開けて馬の稽古をする。

英語訳
Those who practice horsemanship, having heard (mistakenly) that Oguri Hangan rode the demon-colored horse Onikage as if it were a racing horse, and since their disciples find practicing on wooden horses boring because they already know each other's temperaments from daily training, thought that if they rode unknown persons, there would be various interesting reactions. So they took horse equipment to the grounds of Kitano Tenjin shrine or to Yoshicho district, set up a riding course, and practiced horsemanship.
