現代語訳
義経は剣術指南を仰せつかったが、その身は鞍馬の僧正が谷にて天狗より習い覚えた剣術なれば、さしあたって打太刀は天狗でなくてはできない。しかしながら急に天狗も呼ばれないので、打太刀の者に天狗の面をかぶせ、飛び立つようにと羽根をつけ、そばから大団扇にて仰ぎ上がらせ、宙を飛びながら打太刀をする。使い人は高足駄を履き、片手には日の丸の扇を持って、片手にて切り合う。

延喜帝が寒夜に八丈八反の御衣を脱ぎ捨て粗服になり給いしより、公卿、殿上人、その外諸人に至るまで、大通しの流行羽織をさっぱりやめて、鳶色木綿の筒袖羽織を着用した。よって末の世まで延喜・寛暦の御代と清帯のためしに引くなり。

Yoshitsune was ordered to provide instruction in swordsmanship, but since he learned his sword techniques from tengu in the valley of the Kurama Abbot, the sparring partner (uchitachi) should properly be a tengu. However, since a tengu cannot be summoned immediately, they put a tengu mask on the person playing the sparring partner, attached wings so he could fly, and had people with large fans blow air to lift him up so he could perform sword techniques while flying through the air. The attendants wear high geta clogs and hold a rising sun fan in one hand while sword fighting with the other.

Since Emperor Engi cast off his eight-tan robes on that cold night and dressed plainly, court nobles, palace courtiers, and all other people stopped wearing the fashionable long haori completely and began wearing brown cotton tubular-sleeved haori instead. Therefore, this became an example of the Engi and Kanryaku eras and proper attire that is cited even in later generations.
