現代語訳
小栗判官兼氏は鬼鹿毛という悪馬に乗った名人なので、門人に教える時も木馬では鞍の味わいや釣り合いが分からないため、人を木馬にして乗れば、たちまちその意味を飲み込むことが早いとして、先生と門人が互いに木馬の代わりになって、乗ったり乗られたりして稽古をする。

小栗殿はよく乗られるぞ。権門駕籠の乗り方なら、それがしが教えて差し上げよう。
八丈流なら、この節は縁廊でも達者、そもそも近頃は正拳一つ、当物先、羽織のことだ。

英語訳
Oguri Hangan Kaneuji was a master horseman who rode a wicked horse called Onikage (Demon Bay), so when teaching his disciples, he said that wooden horses cannot convey the true feel and balance of the saddle. Therefore, by using people as wooden horses to ride upon, one could quickly grasp the meaning. Thus, the teacher and disciples would take turns serving as horses for each other, riding and being ridden in practice.
