現代語訳
上様お一人の思し召しにより、弓馬剣術が天下一と唱えることが非常に流行し、その上延喜帝の寒夜に八丈八反の御衣を脱ぎ捨てて僧服になられたという故事を聞き、我も我もと僧服になり、空教天上人と唐色木綿の仏崎直しそれより下は唐色の仏崎羽織にて、おのおの弓を持たせて俳諧町家の古道具屋にある兜の鉢、瀬戸物屋にある兜鉢、なんでも「鉢」と名の付いた物、瓦一枚でさえあれば観音の額のように射抜いてみようと意気込んで、いくつも射砕いた。

なんとやかましいことはない。なんのかのと言うなら、亭主の頭を射抜いてやれ。

Moreover, hearing the story of how Emperor Engi cast off his eight-jō eight-tan imperial robes on a cold night to become a monk, everyone began wearing monk's robes. From Kūkyō Tenjōnin in Chinese-colored cotton Bussaki reformed robes down to those in Chinese-colored Bussaki haori, each carrying bows, they eagerly shot and shattered helmet bowls at antique shops in the entertainment districts, helmet bowls at pottery shops - anything with "bowl" in its name, even roof tiles - trying to pierce them like votive plaques to Kannon.
