現代語訳
人間の日用でなくてはならないものは衣食住の三つである。その中でも食は人を養う徳があって、天地の正報というべきである。一つ一つの生活道具は、その食を製し出すための依報であって、みなそれぞれの用途がある。一つとして無駄なものはないけれども、なお粗末にならないようにと、台所をお治めになる奥方様は、道具や食器の務め方を一つ一つ帳面に記し、毎月三十日には改めをなさって、励む者には賞を与え、怠る者には罰を加えて、ただ倹約の道を説き聞かせなさるのである。
♪「国を治めるは小魚を煮るが如くすと言えり」
また家内を治めるのは、重箱で味噌をするように、隅々まで行き届かないようにするのがよいという事である。あまり細かくしすぎると吝嗇というものになってしまい、倹約とは言うべきではない。倹約の道は驕らず高ぶらず、所持しているものを無駄にしないようにすることを言う。
鍋釜といえば所帯道具の頭であるが、金の弦から金々の花も咲かず、お釜を怒らせた例もないので、すり鉢の味噌を上げるのも、片口のおしゃべりも、一升入る壺は一升であって、その分限を知るべきである。下女が杓子当たりが良いといって、これに心を迷わせば、たちまち山の神が荒れ出して、ついには夫婦喧嘩となり、ついにはすり鉢すりこぎばかりに過ちがあるだろう。
とかく倹約を守るのはそなたたちの役目であるから、第一番に火の用心を怠りなくいたし、次には朝晩の食物に無駄のないようにいたすべし、と懇ろに教訓なさる。
何のこのという知ったことではないけれども、実は怒りたがる人々への耳すりかもしれない。

The three things essential for human daily life are clothing, food, and shelter. Among these, food has the virtue of nourishing people and can be called the direct reward of heaven and earth. Each household implement serves as an indirect reward for producing that food, and all have their respective uses. While none are wasteful, to ensure nothing becomes shabby, the mistress who governs the kitchen records the proper use of tools and utensils one by one in an account book. Every month on the 30th, she conducts inspections, giving rewards to those who work diligently and punishment to those who are negligent, teaching only the way of frugality.
♪"It is said that governing a country is like cooking small fish"
Also, governing a household should be like grinding miso with a jūbako (stacked box) - it's better not to reach into every corner. If you make things too detailed, it becomes miserliness and should not be called frugality. The way of frugality means not being arrogant or haughty, and not wasting what one possesses.
Speaking of pots and kettles, though they are the head of household implements, no golden flowers bloom from golden strings, nor are there examples of making the kettle angry. Whether it's the mortar raising miso or the katakuchi (spouted bowl) chattering, a one-shō container holds one shō, and one should know those limits. If a maid becomes confused because her ladle technique seems good, the mountain god (wife) will immediately become furious, eventually leading to marital quarrels, and ultimately only the mortar and pestle will be at fault.
In any case, maintaining frugality is your duty, so first and foremost, be diligent about fire prevention, and next, ensure there is no waste in morning and evening meals - thus she teaches earnestly.
Though this may seem like stating the obvious, it might actually be flattery directed at those prone to anger.
