（思案）「此間はお世話でございました。」
（縁次郎）「おしよう。無縁の兵庫屋に居るのが丁子屋のつき出しだ。よほど瀬川（せかわ）という場があるによ。」
（喜之助）「薫るとは、まず名が美しい。」
——と言いながら、三人が上がる。下女は手を拭きながら出てきて——
（下女）「これはおそろいなさって、よくいらっしゃいました。もし、縁さんがいらっしゃいましたよ。」
——女房おふじが台所より出る。お縁と茶摘みの太縞（ふとで）に、黒七子（なゝこ）の帯、髪は京くるわ（京風の結い方）——
（女房）「よくいらっしゃいました。」
（縁）「主人はどこだ？」
（女房）「ただいまお座敷へ参りました。ほんに江戸町からたびたびお人でございました。よほどお久しぶりでございますね。」
（縁）「久しぶりもていそうだ。」
（思案）「吉原じゃあ四、五日来ないと、久しぶりのようだそうさ。」
（女房）「もし縁さん、京町に何かお世話ができなすったそうでございますね。あまりお浮気をなさいますな。それでお久しぶりだと申しますのさ。」

At this moment, making a pun about being "serious" (majime-naran), they arrive at the entrance —

(Enjirō): "Listen up. The one staying at Hyōgoya — the one with no connections — is Chōjiya's new debutante (tsukidashi). There's quite a Segawa to be had there, you know."
(Kinosuke): "Kaoru — well, that's a beautiful name to start with."
— Saying this, the three of them go inside. The serving girl comes out wiping her hands —
(Maid): "Oh, what a fine group — welcome, welcome! Mrs., Mr. En has arrived!"
— The mistress Ofuji comes out from the kitchen. She wears an En and cha-tsumi thick-striped garment (futon-de), a black nanako-weave sash (obi), her hair done in the Kyō-kuruma style —
(Mistress): "Welcome, welcome."
(En): "Where is the master?"
(Mistress): "He has just gone to the guest room. My, we've had so many visitors coming from Edo-chō lately. It has been quite a while since you've been here, hasn't it?"
(En): "It does seem like it's been a while."
(Shian): "In the Yoshiwara, if you don't show up for four or five days, they say it feels like ages."
(Mistress): "Now, Mr. En, I hear you've been getting involved with someone in Kyō-machi. Please don't be so fickle. That's why it's been so long since we've seen you, isn't it?"
