とらけんはどふでござります《箱：喜の》又まかさうと思つて。いそ
くならいつてきねへ《箱：藤》さやらなら御めんなされまし《割書：ト何かせわし｜く又かけて二丁》

みゝのわきへ黒い糸をさげているのは哥衣と。大文字やのはた
巻斗さ《箱：ゑん》あじな所にめきゝがあるの《箱：女ぼう》おこへながら竹屋
の千両箱で。ござります《箱：しあん》哥菊が地口はどふだの《箱：女房》

（縁）「これ、ちっと黙らないか。」
——藤兵衛はいのじいせ屋の前あたりで聞きつけて、駆けてくる——
（藤兵衛）「これはどなたかと存じました。ご機嫌よゅうございますか。」
（縁）「どこへ行くのか？」
（藤兵衛）「雛鶴さんのお座敷へ参ります。」
（縁）「座敷でなければ話そうと思ってさ。」
（藤兵衛）「それは残念でございます。松蔵、藤二、三味子屋、我物がまいっておりますから、抜けにくうございます。今晩はやはり一丁目でございますか。もし、喜之様、虎拳はどうでございます？」
（喜之助）「また負かそうと思って。急ぐなら行ってきな。」
（藤兵衛）「さようなら、ご免なされまし。」
——と何かせわしなく、また駆けて二丁目へ入る。二丁目より竹屋の歌衣が出てくる。跡より歌菊が出てくる——
（縁）「おしょう、向こうから来るのは誰だと思う？」
（思案）「竹屋の歌衣さ。」
（喜之助）「こいつはきつい。それでは近眼とは思われないわえ。」
（思案）「顔も提灯の紋所もわからないが、禿が耳の脇へ黒い糸を下げているのは歌衣と、大文字屋の鉢巻ばかりさ。」
（縁）「あじな所に目利きがあるの。」
（女房）「お恐れながら、竹屋の千両箱でございます。」
（思案）「歌菊の地口はどうだの。」

— Tōbei hears them from around the front of the Inojise-ya and comes running —
(Tōbei): "My, I wondered who it might be. I hope you are all in good spirits?"
(En): "Where are you off to?"
(Tōbei): "I am on my way to a gathering with Hinazuru."
(En): "If it weren't a formal engagement I'd thought to have a chat with you."
(Tōbei): "What a pity. Matsuzō, Tōji, Shamikoya — my companions have already arrived, so it would be difficult to slip away. Will you be in Icchōme again this evening? Oh, Kino-sama — what do you say to a round of tora-ken?"
(Kinosuke): "I was just thinking I'd beat you again. If you're in a hurry, get on with you."
(Tōbei): "Very well then, please excuse me."
— He hurries off busily, runs back, and enters Nichōme. From Nichōme, Utakoromo of the Takeya comes out, followed by Utagiku —
(En): "Oshō, who do you think that is coming from over there?"
(Shian): "That's Utakoromo of the Takeya."
(Kinosuke): "That's impressive — one wouldn't have thought you were nearsighted at all!"
(Shian): "I can't make out the face, nor the crest on the lantern, but the kamuro trailing a black cord beside her ear — that's something only Utakoromo and Daimonjiya's hachimaki girls do."
(En): "What an unexpected thing to be an expert on."
(Mistress): "Begging your pardon, but she is the Takeya's 'thousand-ryō treasure chest,' so to speak."
(Shian): "And what's the wordplay on Utagiku, then?"
(Mistress): ...
