——その風情——田町の片喰屋久兵衛が縫った、唐糸の惣縫いに伊達紋の打掛け、白繻子の縁取り無垢。髪は手柄髷。髪の上は小間物屋の見世の如く。禿の髪結い、一人は針打ち、一人はやっこ島田。美しく髪結いの長二がその手際を見せ、振り袖新造、川波、世話新造の玉夕が付き添い来る。番新の玉夕、おいらんの衣紋を直し、打掛けの下がったのを直し、縁先へ腰をかける。お州ににっこりと笑い——
（お州）「お藤さん、どうなんしたえ？」
——とただそれだけ言うや——
（女房）「さあ、おいらん、お上がりなされませ。」
（お州）「ここがよふすよ。」
（玉夕）「縁さん、よくお出なんしたね。」
（喜之助）「いつも麗しいお顔つきね。」
（思案）「何かむやみに綺麗でいらっしゃいます。」
（玉夕）「なぶってくんなんすな、拝みんすにえ。」
——「引っ」と言ううちに、松田屋の門番者清二が提灯を消し、「お頼み申します」と言って出て行く。玉夕は茶地の縷金の長筒から煙管を出し、煙草に火をつけておいらんに渡す。また火をつけて縁太郎、みなみなへやる。お州は禿の耳へ口をつけて、何か言いつけてやる——
（お州）「いの字伊勢屋に都京さんがいらっしゃるから、俺が言づてとして、よくお出なんしたと言ってきや。」
——禿は向こうへ行く。上縁の下から犬が伸びをして出る——
（川波）「おやあ、わっちといえば、びっくりしいしたよ。」
（女房）「このお盃は私がお預かり申しましょう。お雪や、すぐに連れ申しや。」
（縁）「五町と万里と、おしづ、八百吉を呼びにやってくだせえ。」
（女房）「かしこまりました。」
——下女が提灯を灯して先へ出る。傾城も立ち上がり、みなみな出る——
（女房）「さようなら、おいらん。」
（お州・玉夕）「おやかましゅうございいした。」
（女房）「どなたも御機嫌よう。」
——みなみなが一丁目へ曲がり先へ行く。喜之助はちょっと松田屋の店先へ寄り——
（喜之助）「井川さん、夏里さん、どうなすった？ 何か一生懸命に書きなさるね。」
英語訳
——A description of her appearance: wearing a garment sewn entirely in Chinese silk thread by Katabamiya Kyūbei of Tamachi, with a formal patterned uchikake (outer robe) and white satin trim, pristine throughout. Her hair styled in a tegara mage. Above her hair ornaments, she gleams like the display case of a haberdasher's shop. The kamuro (apprentice girls) have their hair styled — one in hari-uchi style, one in yakko shimada. Displaying the fine skill of the hairdresser Chōji in their beautiful coiffures, the furisode shinzō (junior courtesan) Kawanami and the sewashinzō (attendant courtesan) Tamayu accompany her. Bansin Tamayu adjusts the courtesan's kimono, fixes the trailing hem of her uchikake, and takes a seat at the edge of the veranda. She smiles at O-Su——
(O-Su): "O-Fuji-san, how have you been?"
——She says just that much——
(Proprietress): "Come now, my lady, please do come in."
(O-Su): "Here will do fine."
(Tamayu): "En-san, how good of you to come."
(Kinosuke): "Always such a beautiful face."
(Shian): "She's just impossibly lovely."
(Tamayu): "Please don't tease me — I'll have to worship you instead!"
——Just as she says "pull," Seiji, the gatekeeper from Matsudaya, extinguishes his lantern and says "I beg your leave" as he departs. Tamayu draws a pipe from a long case of tea-colored lacquer with gold thread inlay, lights it, and passes it to the courtesan. She lights another and passes it around to Entarō and the others. O-Su leans her mouth to the kamuro's ear and whispers some instructions——
(O-Su): "The one called Tōkyō-san is at the Ise-ya marked with 'i' — tell them from me that I said 'how good of you to come.'"
——The kamuro goes across the way. A dog stretches and emerges from under the raised veranda——
(Kawanami): "Oh my, I thought it was someone calling me — gave me quite a fright!"
(Proprietress): "I'll take charge of this sake cup. O-Yuki, see them out straight away."
(En): "Send someone to fetch Gochō, Banri, O-Shizu, and Yaokichi."
(Proprietress): "Certainly."
——A servant girl lights a lantern and leads the way out. The courtesan rises, and everyone exits——
(Proprietress): "Farewell, my lady."
(O-Su & Tamayu): "Sorry for all the noise and bother."
(Proprietress): "Good evening to you all."
——Everyone turns the corner at Icchōme and goes ahead. Kinosuke briefly stops by the front of Matsudaya——
(Kinosuke): "Ikawa-san, Natsusato-san — what are you up to? My, you're writing away so seriously there."
