（思案）「だいぶ地口がご上達だ。」
（玉夕）「それでもじれったうおす、アナ。」
——ト言う所へ、駿河屋の男、贈り物を持ち来る。朱の沈金の丸盆、あらい朱の角まごほり、三木手の丼ぶりには、はつけに生醤油をかけたやつ。これで茶漬けと言わぬばかり。傾城へのてんとり。茶屋か通なり。——
（茶屋の男）「縁さんに七右衛門申します。今晩はよくお出なされました。只今、玉屋のお客人を収めまして、それへ参ります。まっぴらご免なすってくださりましと申し付けました。そして玉屋で小紫さんがあなたへよろしくと、おっしゃりました。」
——と、持ち持ちして帰る所へ、表座敷のおいらんが髪は忍び分け、ささりんとうの縁取り、無垢ばかり勝ち気にして来る——
（留山）「縁さん、よくお出なんしたね。」
（縁）「いやあ、留山さん、どうなさりやした。話があるからちょっとここへお出なせへ。」
（留山）「まあ、ちょっと行って後に参りましょう。」
——と肩のあたりでちょっと色気を見せ、奥二階の方へ行く。入り近づいておす川、みすの端紙で胸を扇ぎながら来たる——
（おす川）「もう何たか変わらぬことのさっさとなってまいりました。」
（喜之助・思案）「おいらん、これはどうでございやす。」
（玉夕）「これこれ、はまいりしたかへ？」
（おす川）「聞いた、聞いた。」
（玉夕）「じゃあ、おっせんかへ？」
（おす川）「あいさ。」
（思案）「おまえがたはしゃあねえかの、蚊はねえかのと、大音寺前のとうしゃあるめえし。」
——皆々笑ふ——
（おす川）「もしへ、下でメリヤスの本をもらって参りました。」
英語訳
(Shian): "Your punning has quite improved."
(Tamayū): "Even so, it's so vexing, honestly!"
——Just at this moment, a man from Surugaya arrives bearing gifts: a round tray of lacquered vermilion with sunken gold decoration, a roughly-lacquered vermilion square box, and in the three-handled bowl, white rice topped with plain soy sauce—practically saying 'this is for ochazuke' without saying it. A tribute gift to the courtesan. It is from the teahouse or a regular patron——
(Teahouse man): "To En-san, this is Shichiemon speaking. You've come out well this evening. I have just seen off the guest from Tamaya and shall head over there shortly. He asked me to beg your most humble pardon. And at Tamaya, Komurasaki-san sent her regards to you."
——As he departs carrying the things, the courtesan of the front parlor enters with her hair arranged in the shinobi-wake style, wearing an outer robe with sasarintō border trim, dressed in nothing but her white underrobe, looking spirited——
(Tomeyama): "En-san, how nice of you to come!"
(En): "Oh, Tomeyama-san, how are you? I have something to talk to you about, so come over here for a moment."
(Tomeyama): "Well, let me just go do this one thing and then I'll come."
——She gives a little flirtatious look over her shoulder and heads toward the inner upper floor. As she draws near and enters, O-Sukawa comes, fanning her chest with the edge paper of a blind——
(O-Sukawa): "Well, that dull business is finally done and over with."
(Kinosuke & Shian): "Courtesan, how about this?"
(Tamayū): "Now, now—have you heard?"
(O-Sukawa): "Yes, yes, I heard."
(Tamayū): "Well then, won't you say it?"
(O-Sukawa): "Indeed."
(Shian): "You all are going on about 'is there anyone around?' and 'are there mosquitoes?'—this isn't the preaching ground in front of Daionji Temple, you know."
——Everyone laughs——
(O-Sukawa): "Excuse me, I received a book of meriyasu down below."
