長崎屋で文京さんがお披露目なんしたのでおす。いっそあだでようすよ。
（玉夕）「おや、お見せなんし。『素顔』とやら言うメリヤスかへ。早く覚えたうすねへ。」
（おす川）「まあ、のちにお見なんし。」
——この内、膳が出る。生漆の椀、清筆・虫食いの会席膳にて二つ木、松田屋ゆえ食物はびなり。今立てはここに略す。よくばかりは松田屋の付け目にて、蓮根の乱切りなり。箸は箱根から取り寄せる、萩の先を削ったのなり。これもここの流儀なり。皆々腹はよきゆえ、茶品とともに並べたばかり。膳は座敷の捨て小舟となる。こゝへ女芸者、八百吉・おしず、太鼓持ち五町万里、駿河屋亭主・七右衛門来りて、大騒ぎになる。この所の洒落、あまり騒々しくて聞き取れぬゆえ、ここに略す。さうこうするうち、引けを打つゆえ、縁二郎がところを収め、喜之介・思案も、それぞれの座敷へ行き、芸者・太鼓持ち、皆々帰る。おす川が次の間を立て切り、長足の膳を取り巻き、新造ともに、けひぞうを始める。硯蓋の上に加えの丸には、こほうかの医者の頭のごとく、しし茸の馬には、手習い草紙を引き裂いたるに似たり。よう絡での蓋茶碗の中は、古茄子の漬けたのに生醤油をかけたやつ——
（川波）「思案さんはどうなんした？」
（夏色）「いっそもうよい機嫌でねてしまいました。いっそ好かぬ近目坊主てのおすよ。好かぬぞよ。」
（川波）「おや、ばからしい。何も食べるものが、おっせんよ。」
（夏色）「となりへ梅漬けを取りに遣ればようしたねへ。これこれ、その子はだれだ。この土瓶へ茶を一つ持ってきてくりや。いい子だぞよ。」
——と言いながら、箸の代わりに刺した松葉の簪を、行燈へさし込んで、吹いて刺す。おす川がかぶろは両差しを抜いて、両師の蓋へ入れて、近い棚へ置き、寝巻きを帯へ挟み、おいらんの櫛・笄をしまい、火を入れて来り、そこらを片付ける——

At Nagasakiya, Bunkyō-san has made her debut, you know. It's really quite something.
(Tamayū): "Oh my, do show it to me. Is it the meriyasu called 'Sugao' or something? I'd like to learn it quickly."
(O-Sukawa): "Oh, look at it later."
——During this time, the dinner trays are brought out. Lacquered bowls, a kaiseki dinner service of seihitsu and mushikui style on two-legged trays; since it is Matsudaya, the food is plain. The full menu is omitted here. The one special touch is Matsudaya's signature item: roughly-cut lotus root. The chopsticks are brought in from Hakone, made from shaved tips of hagi (bush clover)—this too is the custom of this place. Since everyone's stomachs are already satisfied, only tea accompaniments are set out. The trays become mere decoration of the room. Here arrive female geisha Yaokichi and O-Shizu, the taikomochi (professional jester) Gochō Banri, and Surugaya's proprietor Shichiemon, and it becomes a great commotion. The witticisms exchanged here are too noisy to make out, so they are omitted here. In the midst of all this, the closing bell is struck, so Enjirō's room is wrapped up, and Kinosuke and Shian depart each to their respective rooms; the geisha and taikomochi all return home. O-Sukawa partitions off the adjoining room, sets out the tall-legged trays, and together with the shinzō (apprentice courtesan), begins the kehizō. On the suzuributa tray's round accompaniment dish, it looks like the head of a kohouka doctor; the horse-shaped shiitake mushroom resembles a torn page of a calligraphy practice booklet. In the covered tea bowl set in the yōraku style, inside is old pickled eggplant topped with plain soy sauce——
(Kawanami): "What has become of Shian-san?"
(Natsuiro): "Oh, he went to bed in a quite merry state already. Really, I can't stand that nearsighted little monk-type, you know. I just can't stand him."
(Kawanami): "My, how silly. Isn't there anything to eat?"
(Natsuiro): "We should have sent to the neighbor's for pickled plums. Now then, who is that girl? Would you bring a cup of tea in this earthenware pot? There's a good girl."
——Saying this, she pokes the pine-needle hairpin she had been using in place of chopsticks into the paper lantern, blows on it, and replaces it. O-Sukawa's kaburo (young attendant) removes both hairpins, places them in the covers of the dual trays, sets them on the nearby shelf, tucks the nightclothes into her sash, puts away the courtesan's combs and kōgai ornamental hairpins, brings in the fire, and tidies up the area——
