——折よく、禿（しんぞう）が合図に傾城の後ろ姿。来たり、喜之介が屏風の内へ入る。この箇所の妙な言いまわしは、作者しばらく預かるなり。この本を見る人、たいてい御推察あれかし。向こうの座敷は「死ね、死のう」という仲と見え、廻し屏風の太公望もよだれを流すばかりの睦言（むつごと）、ぽつちぽつちの話し声——
（女郎）「それお見なんし、布団の外へ落ちなんすな。まあこちらをお向きなんし、ねえ。」
（客）「謝ったら、不承ながら向いてやろう。向かせられるは恩ならず、向いてやるのを恩にしてだ。」
（女郎）「男心の憎いのも、嬉しきほどの野暮となりいしたのさ。さあ謝りいすから、お向きなんし。寂しゅうおさアな。あなたにお聞き申しいます事がおすにへ。夕べどこへお出なんした？ 京町かえ？」
（客）「ふうん、おかしな事を言うの。京町の猫が揚屋町へ通ったという噂は聞いたが、おれが京町へ行った沙汰はまだ聞かなんだ。」
（女郎）「よしておくんなんし。留川さんが中の町で見かけたと、おっせえした。さあ、本当に早くおっせえしなんし。言わないと、くすぐりいすにへ。」
（客）「これさ、よさないか。ぶちのめすぞよ。」
（女郎）「そりゃあ嘘でおすが。ほんに、あなたはわっちを呼んでおくんなんすきかえ？」
（客）「この頃はだいぶ愚痴になったぜ。」
（女郎）「それでも、あなた。あなたのお父さんやお母さんが不承知な時は、どうしましょうねえ。それを思うと死にとうおすよ。」
（客）「それよりまだ先が、丸二年三ヶ月というものだから、そのうちにはそちらに、とんだ事ができるだろう。」

——At just the right moment, a shinzō [apprentice courtesan] signals, and the back figure of the courtesan appears. Kinosuke enters behind the folding screen. The clever wordplay in this passage the author holds in reserve for now—those who read this book, by and large, may draw their own conclusions. The room beyond appears to be in that state of "die, let us die together" [deep amorous intimacy], and even the patient fisherman depicted on the partition screen looks ready to drool at the murmured endearments, the soft, halting voices——
(Courtesan): "Look now, don't fall out of the futon. Come, turn this way, won't you—please."
(Customer): "If you apologize, I'll turn toward you, though reluctantly. Being made to turn is no favor to me; you should count it as a favor that I turn toward you."
(Courtesan): "How infuriating a man's heart can be—yet it's the kind of boorishness that's almost endearing. Well then, I'm apologizing, so please turn toward me. I feel so lonely. You see, there's something I'd like to ask you. Where did you go last night? Was it Kyō-machi?"
(Customer): "Oh-ho, what an odd thing to say. I've heard the rumor about the cat of Kyō-machi visiting Ageya-machi—but I've yet to hear any news of me going to Kyō-machi."
(Courtesan): "Don't try to dodge it. Tomekawa-san said she spotted you in Naka-no-chō. Come now, tell me the truth, right away. If you won't tell me, I'll tickle you."
(Customer): "Now, now—won't you stop? I'll give you a good thrashing."
(Courtesan): "That's a lie and you know it. But truly—do you call for me, you know?"
(Customer): "Lately you've become quite the complainer."
(Courtesan): "Even so. If your father and mother should disapprove, what on earth would we do? When I think of that, I feel like dying."
(Customer): "Beyond that, there's still a full two years and three months to go—so within that time, all sorts of things may well happen on your side."
(Courtesan): "Really…"
