【割書（地の文）】こう言いながら枕と鼻紙を持ち出て行く。客は腹が立ってたまらないが、どうしようもなく、寝ようとしても寝られず、行灯の落書きを読みながらやきもきしているうちに、七つの拍子木も鳴って時が移り、田中の方の寺々ではじゃんじゃんと半鐘が鳴り響く。思われるのも飽きられるのも、つまるところはみな遊びのうちのこと。縁二郎は宵より、京町の別にておす川と大口舌——それもおす川は性徳、縁二郎を好かぬゆえ、いささかなことを手にして寝るつもりの、みな狂言にて——うちの前の松飾りを見るように後ろ合わせの白川、よくも夜はさらりと明けて、連子の隙間から差し込む明かりに、長持の埃きらめくかわたれどき（薄明の頃）。下ではどしどしと米を搗く音。ねずの男は行灯を引きに来る。入れ替わって——

【地の文】と言うところへ、思案が相方の夏色が座敷に置いた羽織を取りに来る。後より思案をきて来る。喜之介も御簾の紙で顔を拭きながら起きて来る。夏浜もあとより来たる。
【縁二郎】「さあ、すぐに帰ろう。」
【夏浜】「羽織の衿が折れんせん（折れてしまいますから）。お待ちなんし。」
【思案】「おいらんはたいぶお疲れの——」
【地の文】と言えどもおす川はたわいなし。みなみな廊下へ出る。ねずは一階中の紙くずを掃き集め、行灯は泉岳寺の石塔のように並べてある。
【喜之介】「この紙くずを燃やして置くと、おきゃあきゃあと言うやつができます（うるさいことになりますよ）。」
【思案】「こう紙くずを掃き集めたところは、羊のへどというもんだ。」
【縁二郎】「いいいい。」
【地の文】と梯子を降りる。板鼻に文（ふみ）が並べてあり、梯子の下には贈り物の空の積み重ねてある。茶屋男は草履を直す。
【茶屋男】「お前さんのは、この二重花緒でございますかね。」
【夏浜・夏色】「此間に出なんしへ（くぐりからお出なさいませ）。」

【縁二郎】「大きにおそくなった。駕籠は入れているか？」
【茶屋男】「入れておきました。」

**[Narrative text (warishō)]:** Saying this, she takes the pillow and her paper tissues and leaves. The client is furious but has no recourse. Unable to sleep, he reads the idle scrawlings on the paper lantern, fidgeting restlessly, until the clappers strike the seventh hour and time passes on. From the temples in the direction of Tanaka, the hand-bells ring out and toll. Whether one is loved or tired of—in the end, it is all part of the game of the pleasure quarters.
