【夕】「おや、縁さん、どうなさいましたか？今朝は山谷の摂待寺の毘沙門様へ参りました。」
【縁二郎】「こ縁さんによくいっておくんなさい。」
【夕】「さようなら、おしずかに。」
【駕籠】「さあ、お乗りなさいませ。」
【茶屋男】「お履き物はついたか？さようなら。この間に——」
【縁二郎】「よくいってくりや。」
【駕籠】「こちらの旦那、お羽織をもう少しお入れなさいませ。」
【駕籠】「駕籠棒、組み——よいしょ、どっこいさ！」
【地の文】と、駕籠を三挺ともに担ぎ上げる。
○送られて行く提灯と別れ路に聞く鐘とは、担いでみれば釣り合わぬ——大尽客に恋いとろう（恋い惚れよう）。
送る傾城（けいせい）、道心者（どうしんじゃ）、物もらい同士の朝話し。口より煙の出る頃、立つや今戸の瓦煙。座る四つ手（駕籠）に三人は、日本堤を一つ三（ひとつさん）に急がせてこそ——

**[O-Yū]:** "My, my, you're out early, aren't you?"
**[Yū]:** "Oh my, En-san, how have you been? This morning I went to pay my respects to the Bishamonten at the Shōbōji temple in Sanya."
**[Enjirō]:** "Please do give my regards to Ko-En-san."
**[Yū]:** "Farewell then. Do take care."
**[Palanquin bearer]:** "Right then, please step aboard!"
**[Teahouse attendant]:** "Have the sandals been put away? Farewell then. In the meantime—"
**[Enjirō]:** "Give them my regards."
**[Palanquin bearer]:** "Sir, please tuck your haori (jacket) in a little more."
**[Palanquin bearer]:** "Poles at the ready—heave-ho, up she goes!"
**[Narrative text]:** —and all three palanquins are hoisted up together.
○ The paper lantern that escorts you away, and the temple bell heard at the parting of the roads—when you hoist them up, they do not balance evenly. Fall in love with a great patron, why don't you!
A courtesan who sees her client off, a lay ascetic, and a beggar—exchanging morning pleasantries together. It is the hour when breath turns to smoke in the cold air. Rising now is the kiln smoke of Imado's tileworks. The three men settle into their four-handled palanquins (yotsute kago), and are hurried along the Nihon Embankment at a swift pace—
