現代語訳
おとみは来義の仲間の戯れを本当のことと思い、路上を見回すが、つんとして通り過ぎる。路上の人々も彫り物を消したことを知っていて、元々一徹で短慮な路上の人が、おとみの髪房を引っつかみ、ぐっと引き寄せて、蹴ったり殴ったりして懲らしめる。
おとみは涙ながらに言う。
「これはあまりに道理に合わないではありませんか、路上さん。このごろおとよさんに立ち返って邪魔になるので、愛想尽かし。私はあなたの身の上に俄かに金が要ると聞いたので、来義を騙して二十両借り取ったもの。義理づくで彫り物は消した。あなたに心中を立てての事です。」
【おとみ】
「されども身体は汚してはいません。その二十両の金もここにあります。」
【路上】
「ややや、そうとは知らず、腹の立った勢いに任せて懲らしめしてしまった。どうか許してくれ、おとみ。」
「その金を貸すから、腹来義の心根を推察しなさい。これよりすぐに連れて立ち退き、いずこの浦にも立ち越えて、忍んで夫婦となり暮らそう。心安くしなさい、おとみ。」とて、すぐに連れて立ち退く。
英語訳
Otomi thinks her companions' jest is real and looks around the street, but passes by with dignity. The people on the street also know that she had her tattoo erased, and a man from the street who was originally stubborn and short-tempered grabs Otomi's hair, pulls her close, and punishes her by kicking and hitting her.
Otomi says through tears:
"This is far too unreasonable, Rojū-san. Lately I've returned to Otoyo-san and become a nuisance, so she's grown tired of me. I heard that you suddenly needed money for your circumstances, so I deceived Raigi and borrowed twenty ryō. Out of duty I had the tattoo erased. This was all for the sake of committing love suicide with you."
【Otomi】
"However, I have not defiled my body. Those twenty ryō are here as well."
【Rojū】
"Ah, I didn't know this. I acted in anger and punished you rashly. Please forgive me, Otomi."
"I'll lend you that money, so consider Raigi's true intentions carefully. From now on, let's immediately leave together, go to some distant shore, and secretly become husband and wife and live together. Be at ease, Otomi." And so saying, he immediately takes her away with him.
