現代語訳
酒がたけなわになった頃、文なんが音代の手を取り、手の彫り物を見ようといろいろと試みるが、見せようとしない。無理無体に袖をまくって見ると、立派に六四郎の手によって「二世も三世も六四郎女房」と彫ってある。
【文なん】
「さてこそ、とんだ大きな彫り物だ。これを彫る時はさぞ痛かったろうに。また似たこともあるものだ。音代の手にもやはり六四郎の女房と彫ってあったが、よもやその六四郎ではあるまい。」
「この頃音代が六四郎のところへ駆け込むという噂を聞いた。」
その話を聞くより、髪を逆立て身に覚えなき無理を言いかけ、音代に見返り切れ文を叩きつけられて、たちまち狂乱の如くになってしまった。
文なんは火鉢を投げつけられる。
それは言う由もなく、雪のようになってとんでもなく散乱し、人は真っ白になって立ってうろたえていると言われている。
そうそうと籠に押し込めて送り返す。
英語訳
When the drinking had reached its peak, Bunnan took Otoyo's hand and tried various ways to see the tattoo on her hand, but she wouldn't show it. When he forcibly rolled up her sleeve, he could clearly see that Rokushirō had tattooed "Rokushirō's wife for two or three lifetimes" by his own hand.

"Well, well, what a large tattoo! It must have been quite painful when this was carved. There are similar cases too. Otomi's hand also had 'Rokushirō's wife' tattooed on it, but surely it can't be the same Rokushirō."
"I recently heard rumors that Otomi has been running to Rokushirō's place."
