こめくにはかぶきこくとなづく
このくにの人は善人はかほの
いろ白く武ゆうある人は
かほにあかきすぢありて
又あく人はかほにあをき

ゐんぼうをくわだつる
事あればかならず
くろきうんき
あらはるゝといふ
しかる時は善悪
かほにあらはれて

あくをしりそけ
あやまちなき

たからものなどふんじつして
そうどうやますといふ
此国の人の目には青き筋も
あかきすぢも見へぬにや
思ふに此くにのみにあらず

善人のことく善人も心に

現代語訳
《題：歌舞伎国》
和荘兵衛はまた一つの国にやって来た。この国は歌舞伎国と名づけられている。この国の人は、善人は顔の色が白く、武勇のある人は顔に赤い筋があり、また悪人は顔に青い筋があって、その人が陰謀を企てることがあれば必ず黒い雲気が現れるという。
そうであれば善悪が顔に現れて、善を推挙し悪を退けて間違いがないはずなのに、常に財宝などを紛失して騒動が絶えないという。
この国の人の目には青い筋も赤い筋も見えないのだろうか。思うに、この国だけではなく、我々の心もまた同様である。善悪は人の面に現れるべきなのだが、悪人も媚びへつらえば善人のようであり、善人も心に悪意があれば悪人のようである。これはみな人を見ることに迷いがあるからだと、自分の過ちを悟り、また他の国へと心を向けた。

**Title: Kabuki Country**
Wa Sōbei came to yet another country. This country was called Kabuki Country. In this country, good people have white faces, brave people have red lines on their faces, and evil people have blue lines on their faces. When such a person plots something sinister, black miasma is said to inevitably appear.
If this were so, good and evil would be manifest on people's faces, allowing them to promote good and reject evil without error. Yet treasures and such are constantly being lost, and turmoil never ceases.
Perhaps the people of this country cannot see the blue lines or red lines with their eyes? Upon reflection, this is true not only of this country, but of our hearts as well. Good and evil should be revealed on people's faces, but even evil people appear like good people when they flatter and fawn, while good people appear like evil people when they harbor malice in their hearts. Realizing that this is all due to our delusion in judging people, he recognized his own error and turned his heart toward yet another country.
