和荘兵へは又一つのくにゝきたるこの国の人はかんにんを
もとゝするゆへにかんにんこくとなづく此くにのちんじゆは
韓信（かんしん）わいかの市におゐて市人のまたをくゞりたる
ぞうをきさみ神にまつる和荘兵へそこらを
めぐりみるにこなたよりきたる人
大道へたんをはさしが風にしたかつて
むかふよりくる人のかほにかゝる
たんをかけたる人大におどろき
土にひざまづきていへるは
われ思はずもきくんのおもてを
けかしよも此つみ大￣イなり
われを心のまゝにむちうち
給へといふたんをかけられ
たる人のいふこれきくんの
わざにあらずかぜの
ためのあやまちにて
風下（ふうか）にいたるはわが
ふせうなりいかんぞ
きくんのたんせきを
やみ給ふをうれふる
なりとてたもとより
一 貝（かい）のたんせきのくすりを
出しあたへてわかれけり
和荘兵へこのくにの人の
ふるまひを見て
人たるものかくのことく
ものをかんにんせばなんぞ
あらそふ事あらんやと

現代語訳
《題：堪忍国》
和荘兵衛はまた一つの国に来た。この国の人は堪忍を基本とするので堪忍国と名付けられている。この国の鎮守は韓信で、韓信が淮陰の市で市人の股をくぐった像を刻み、神として祀っている。
和荘兵衛がそこらを巡り見ていると、こちらから来た人が大道で痰を吐いたが、風に煽られて向こうから来る人の顔にかかった。痰をかけられた人は大いに驚き、土に膝まづいて言うには「私は思わずもあなた様のお顔を汚してしまいました。この罪は大変重いものです。私を心のままに鞭打ってください」と言う。痰をかけられた人が言うには「これはあなた様の行為ではありません。風のための過失で、風下に居たのは私の不注意です。どうしてあなた様の痰の件で心配させてしまうのでしょう」と言って、袂から一貝の痰の薬を出して与えて別れた。
和荘兵衛はこの国の人の振る舞いを見て、人たる者がこのように物事を堪忍すれば、どうして争うことがあろうかと、道徳を感じたのであった。

《Title: The Country of Forbearance》
Wa Sōbei came to yet another country. Since the people of this country base themselves on forbearance, it is called the Country of Forbearance. The tutelary deity of this country is Han Xin, and they have carved a statue of Han Xin crawling between a man's legs in the market of Huaiyin and enshrine it as a god.
As Wa Sōbei was walking around and observing, a person coming from this direction spat phlegm on the main road, but it was blown by the wind and hit the face of a person coming from the opposite direction. The person who was spat upon was greatly surprised, knelt down on the ground and said, "I have inadvertently soiled your honorable face. This sin is very grave. Please whip me as you see fit." The person who had been spat upon said, "This was not your doing. It was an accident caused by the wind, and it was my carelessness to be downwind. How can I trouble you over this matter of phlegm?" He then took out medicine for phlegm worth one shell from his sleeve, gave it to the other person, and they parted.
Seeing the behavior of the people in this country, Wa Sōbei felt the virtue of how, if people showed such forbearance in all matters, how could there be any conflict at all?
