和荘兵衛は堪忍国の先生に尋ねた。「私も堪忍は万事に用いて効果があるものと思い慎んでいますが、この国の人ほどに忍耐することは困難です。どのようにすればこのような心を持てるのでしょうか」と問うと、かの先生は一つの袋を和荘兵衛に与えて言った。「これは堪忍袋と言って、この国第一の宝ですが、あなたに授けます。堪忍のことに別の詳細はありません。ただこの袋の緒を切らないようにしなさい」と繰り返し戒めたのは、後になって思い知られることであった。
【堪忍国の先生】
「堪忍ということを詳しく講釈するには及びません。この袋の緒を切らないように察してください」

「これはありがたく存じます」
【ここより下巻】
こうして和荘兵衛は堪忍国に至って大いに我が身を恥じ、「何とかまた我が身の戒めともなるべき国に至って見たいものだ」と雲の上より遠眼鏡で見ると、何やら見慣れない人の行き交う有様があり、「きっと国があるに違いない」と鶴の羽根に任せて急いだ。

Wa Sōbei asked a teacher in the Country of Forbearance: "I too believe that forbearance is effective when applied to all matters and try to practice it carefully, but it is difficult to endure as much as the people of this country do. How can one possess such a heart?" When he asked this, the teacher gave Wa Sōbei a bag and said: "This is called the 'bag of forbearance' and is the greatest treasure of this country, but I shall bestow it upon you. There are no other details about forbearance. Simply ensure that you do not cut the cord of this bag." His repeated admonishment would be understood only later.
【Teacher of the Country of Forbearance】
"There is no need to explain forbearance in detail. Simply understand not to cut the cord of this bag."
【Wa Sōbei】
"This is most grateful."
【From here begins the lower volume】
Thus, having reached the Country of Forbearance, Wa Sōbei was greatly ashamed of himself and thought, "Somehow I would like to reach another country that could serve as a lesson for myself." Looking through a telescope from above the clouds, he saw the appearance of unfamiliar people coming and going. "Surely there must be a country there," he thought, and hurried along, trusting to the crane's wings.
