《題：不見上国》《割書：うへみす｜ こく》
和荘兵衛は程なくまた一つの国にやって来た。この国の人は、自分より上に立つ風雅な人や尊い人を羨まないことを第一とする国である。そのため老若男女皆、常に笠を被り上を見ないのである。至極道理のある国である。
「上見れば及ばぬ事ぞ多かりき 笠着て暮らせ己が心に」
と言われるのも、この国のことであろう。上を見れば欲が出ると世の諺にあるように、物の足ることを知らず上を見る時は羨ましいこと、欲しいことが出てきて不義の妄想に惑う。上を見ないに勝ることはないと、和荘兵衛は大いにこの国の趣を感じた。

Wa Sōbei soon arrived at yet another country. The people of this country made it their foremost principle not to envy those of higher rank, more refined people, or more noble people than themselves. Therefore, old and young, men and women alike, always wore hats and did not look upward. This was a most reasonable country.
"Looking up, there are so many things beyond one's reach; wear a hat and live according to one's own heart"
This saying must refer to this country. As the worldly proverb goes, "looking up creates greed"—when one doesn't know contentment and looks upward, envious thoughts and desires arise, leading one astray into unrighteous delusions. There is nothing better than not looking up. Wa Sōbei was deeply moved by the character of this country.
