(This teaching) moistens (the earth) like dew, yet I am like one who adds a mere speck of dust to a great mountain, or a falling drop of dew to a mighty river — I have only briefly outlined the broad principles and made this record thereof.
I, Zhi (治), am by nature without talent or learning, and my disposition is not sharp or quick-witted. I have not yet sufficiently read through the various texts of the inner scriptures (Buddhist canon). The treatises and prefaces I have composed are crude and clumsy, and excessively wordy. Suddenly, upon receiving your letter, I find that you have praised and described (my work in flattering terms). Stroking myself and reflecting inwardly, I am filled with both shame and awe in equal measure. I am deeply humbled that the masters have taken the trouble of coming from afar.
