村より南蛮伴天連（バテレン）が出たとのことでございます。十年ほど以前、甲府殿・館林殿からも老中へご相談がありました際、軽き者（身分の低い者）については、寺の手形（証明書）や代々の宗旨などを改めて申し付けるようにとのことでした。公儀よりお付けになった面々については、いかように申し付けるべきかとのご相談につき、皆々の返答といたしましては、証文を取ることが難しい者については、直接（殿様から）ご法度の次第を仰せ渡されるのが然るべきであるとの返答でございました。ご心得までにお申し伝えいたします。下々の者については、従来通り人別（にんべつ）改めを仰せ付けられるのが然るべきかと存じます。
一、近国より密かに忍んで、万事の様子を探り、江戸へ聞こえるようなことがあり得ますので、油断なさらぬようにとのことでございます。

...that a Southern Barbarian padre (Bateren) had emerged from a village [within the domain]. Some ten years ago, when the Lords of Kōfu and Tatebayashi also consulted the Senior Councilors (Rōjū) on this matter, [the response was that] for those of lower status, they should be made to renew their temple certificates (tera tegata) and have their hereditary religious sect affiliation re-examined. As for those persons attached [to the domain] by the Shogunal government (kōgi), the question was raised as to how they should be dealt with, and the collective response was that for those from whom it is difficult to obtain written pledges (shōmon), it would be appropriate for [the domain lord] to directly convey to them the stipulations of the prohibition. This is conveyed for your information. As for the lower people, it is considered appropriate that the religious census (ninbetsu aratame) be carried out as has been done previously.
Item: Since it is entirely possible that [agents] from neighboring domains may be secretly infiltrating [your domain] and gathering intelligence on all manner of affairs, which could then reach Edo, you must not let your guard down.
