現代語訳
禿の竹のは梅かえが可愛がってくれるのを、子供心にもありがたく思い、親の万右衛門のところへ言って、お礼を申し上げてくれと頼んだ。娘の心の慎ましさに、万右衛門も取る物も取りあえず、菓子袋などを持って梅かえのところへお礼に来たので、梅かえは万右衛門に三両の金を与えた。

うなぎ屋育ちの滑らかな娘に、ご不憫をかけていただき、ありがたく存じます。千年も万右衛門もお目にかけていただけるとは。この軽焼きは誓願寺前の名物屋の正銘、亀の食べるものではございません。

ずっとこちらへ寄って話しておくれ、亀のお父さん。それにしても正直な人だね。
亀も軽焼きを食うんですかい。それで誓願寺前の軽焼きを亀は食べませんかい。可愛らしいの。

このようにしていただいては、何とも迷惑千万でございますが、お返し申し上げます。

さあさあ、遠慮をしなさんすな。私の名も梅かえなれば、三百両までは出してもたんない（足りない）。

The kamuro Takeno was grateful in her childish heart for Umegae's affection, and told her father Man'emon to go and express their thanks. Touched by his daughter's thoughtfulness, Man'emon hurried over without delay, bringing sweets and such to thank Umegae, whereupon Umegae gave Man'emon three ryo in gold.
