現代語訳
さて万右衛門は三両分の亀を買い出し、少し不足な所へはうなぎを混ぜ、亀の腹へは「梅がえ祈祷」と書き付けて、大橋の上より放したのであった。うなぎの腹へも「梅がえ祈祷」と書くつもりであったが、いたずら子の坂やきを起きているうちに剃ってやるよりも、もっと難しい芸であれば、なかなか手に負えない事で、結局蒲焼にするように裂いて、首も骨もなくしてしまわねば書くことができず、それでは却って祈祷にはならない事なので、そのままにして放したのであった。

さてさて、おびただしく放すものだ。
見物の大勢が歌って言った。
亀にうなぎは数々ございます。諸国の亀を放す時は、初級無級と逃げるのです。後に亀の行く先は、是生滅法と泳ぐのです。辛党なうなぎは二筋三筋連れ立って、格別気楽と逃げるのです。やはて食いたがる人もなし、われも後生と気を変えて、近所の釣りもやめにいたそうと申したのであった。

Now, Man'emon bought turtles worth three ryō, mixed in some eels where there was a shortage, wrote "Umegae prayer" on the turtles' bellies, and released them from atop the great bridge. He had intended to write "Umegae prayer" on the eels' bellies as well, but this proved more difficult than shaving a mischievous child's head while they were awake - it was such a challenging feat that it was quite beyond his abilities. In the end, he would have had to slice them like preparing kabayaki, removing head and bones entirely before he could write on them, but that would hardly serve as a prayer offering, so he released them as they were.

The large crowd of spectators sang and said:
There are countless turtles and eels. When releasing turtles from various provinces, both novice and masterless ones flee. Later, the turtles swim toward their destination with "this is the law of arising and passing away." The sake-loving eels flee in groups of two or three, feeling particularly carefree. There's no one who wants to eat them anymore; even we have had a change of heart about the afterlife and have decided to give up fishing in the neighborhood.
