現代語訳
あの大亀は願いの通り大海へ放され、嬉しさのあまり、せめて恩を報じようと、梅がえの元へ客となってやって来て、「初会から身請けしたい」と言う。梅がえは千秋と深く契りを結んでいるので、いろいろと言い回して見ても、とかく身請けしたいと言うので、「それならば心中が見たい」と難題をしかけたところ、亀は胸を開けて見せたが、そこには「梅がえ」とあり、「祈祷」という文字がへその下にあることは見つからず、仕方なく心に納得いかないまま身請けされて連れて行かれる。
【亀】
これで疑いは晴らしてくれましたでしょう。
【梅がえ】
変なところに彫りなさったものですね、ばからしい。
【亀】
身請けするのは千両、契るのは万年ですよ。
さて大亀は梅がえを身請けして、川端へと連れて来て言うには、「私はあなたの祈祷のためということで万右衛門に放された大亀です。私がこのように大海の住まいをなすのもあなたのおかげなので、この恩を報じようと仮に客の姿となって、あなたを身請けしたのです。この上は私の住む竜宮の隠れ家へと共に参りましょう」と、あの放された小亀を水中へ飛び込ませ、石のごとく並ばせて、水の上を安々と竜宮へ連れて行く。
♪背中を向けては踏み心地が悪かろう、小亀たちは腹の方を向けて渡らせ申そう。海を渡るのに駒下駄でもあるまいぞ。

That great turtle, released into the ocean as he had wished, was so overjoyed that he sought to repay his debt of gratitude. He came to Umegae in the guise of a customer, saying he wanted to buy out her contract from their first meeting. Since Umegae had made deep promises with Senshu, she tried various ways to deflect him, but he persisted in wanting to buy her out. When she challenged him saying "then let me see your sincere heart," the turtle opened his chest to show her. There was indeed "Umegae" written there, but the characters for "prayer" that should have been below the navel could not be found. Reluctantly, with her heart unsatisfied, she was bought out and taken away.

Now the great turtle, having bought out Umegae, brought her to the riverbank and said: "I am the great turtle who was released by Man'emon for the sake of your prayers. Since my ability to make my home in the great ocean is thanks to you, I have temporarily taken the form of a customer to buy out your contract in order to repay this debt. Now let us go together to the hidden palace in the Dragon Palace where I dwell." He made the small turtles that had been released dive into the water and line up like stones, then easily transported them across the water to the Dragon Palace.
♪ "Having them face upward would make for poor footing - have the little turtles turn their bellies up for you to cross. When crossing the sea, it's not as if you're wearing wooden clogs!"
