四十八手叙
千手観音（せんじゆくわんおん）はさらなり。薩摩守（さつまのかみ）
忠度（たゞのり）#1は。一本の手にさへ。六弥太#2を
とつて投（なげ）のけたまへば。蚰（けぢ〳〵）も足（あし）が
手ならば。やみ〳〵と#3翠簾紙（みすかみ）に
包（つゝまれ）て。捨（すて）られはせまじと呟（つぶや）き。
現代語訳
四十八手序文
千手観音はいうまでもないことである。薩摩守忠度は、一本の手だけでも六弥太を掴んで投げ飛ばしたのであれば、ゲジゲジも足が手であるならば、闇夜にまぎれて翠簾紙に包まれて捨てられることはないだろうと呟いている。

The Thousand-Armed Kannon goes without saying. If Satsuma-no-kami Tadanori could grab and throw Rokuyata with just one hand, then even a centipede, if its legs were hands, would mutter that it would not be discarded wrapped in green curtain paper in the darkness of night.
