現代語訳
さて、艾の精霊は軍才を大将として、千入袋艾を先頭に立て、雨の皿入を陰卒として、草紙の陣へと押し寄せた。しかし所詮草紙のことなので、切った所が浅く、紙が汚れてしまうか、引き裂いて捨ててしまおうかと、三百余騎の軍兵がおのおの大筆・中筆・新書・唐筆を横たえ、墨をたっぷりと含ませ、向かってくる者を拝み消そうとし、また巡り合えば、車塗り、蚯蚓流、蟹文字などが当たりを幸いに殴りかかった。そのため草紙も一枚絵も、みんな泥だらけになって逃げ失せた。
もとより敵は切艾のことなので、この上切られても何とも思わず、そのようにかかってきた。そのため唐紙表紙は辛い目に遭い、青本は色を失い、赤本の赤は恥じて逃げて行った。
侍大小の作七兵衛が追いかけて来て、後ろへ引けば、引野屋も身を捕らえられそうになりながら前へと進んで行く。
大将古状紙は弁慶状の勢いをなして戦ったけれども、大筆に墨を含んだ状紙によって手習い状と塗りかけられて、引き返し落ち延びた。
敵も味方も入り乱れ、艾は花を散らした。
縫の大将軍才が下知する。
筆に力は覚えたり、筆物を見せようと思うままに。

Now, the spirit of moxa, with Gunsai as general, advanced with thousand-bag moxa at the front and rain-bowl soldiers as hidden troops, pressing toward the picture book formation. However, since they were dealing with picture books after all, the cuts were shallow - whether to soil the paper or tear it up and throw it away - three hundred cavalry soldiers each wielding large brushes, medium brushes, shinsho brushes, and Chinese brushes horizontally, soaking them thoroughly with ink, tried to pray away those who approached, and when they met again, wheel-painting style, earthworm style, crab script and such struck wherever they could hit. As a result, both the picture books and single-sheet illustrations became covered in mud and fled away.
Since the enemy was originally cut moxa, even if cut further, they thought nothing of it and continued their attack. Therefore, the Chinese paper covers suffered terribly, the blue books lost their color, and the red of the red books fled in shame.
Samurai retainer Sakushichibe came chasing after them, and when pulled from behind, Hikino-ya also moved forward while nearly being captured.
General Old Document Paper fought with the vigor of Benkei documents, but was painted over as practice writing by document paper soaked with ink from large brushes, and retreated in defeat.
Both enemy and ally became entangled in confusion, and the moxa scattered its flowers.
