現代語訳
孫兵衛は稲荷の御告げによって、もぐさ屋の若者が頼朝公であることを以前から知っていたので、何とか北条の姫君と密かに会わせ、将来は時政の婿として世に出そうと思い、腰元のせきやと示し合わせ、この度姫君のお灸治療のためのもぐさのご用を道意に仰せつけられるよう奥家老へ願った。
【孫兵衛】
切りもぐさは非常にお調法で、その上製法が格別でございます。
【奥家老（付家老）】
珍しい病気の願い事だな。新五左衛門も得心した。早々切りもぐさをたくさん持参せよと、その道意とやらにお前がすぐに申し伝えよ。それは幸いなことだ。
孫兵衛はもぐさ屋へ来て、政子姫の病気のことならびにもぐさのご用を仰せつけられることを詳しく話し、稲荷の御告げによって頼朝公と知ったことまで初めて道意に物語った。この時を幸いに力を合わせて頼朝公を世に出し申し上げようという。
道意は孫兵衛の志に感じ、頼朝公より預かった白旗を取り出し、孫兵衛に見せて真意を明かす。
【孫兵衛】
お互いにもとは御家来筋、身を売るため心を合わせて忠義を尽くしましょう。弓矢を捨てた今の身ですが、心は鋭い。千枚通しも太い袋に刺されば、たちまち平家を打ち切りのこざりは忘れず、嘘つかず。そこで本屋でございます。
【道意】
こうした所は矢口の渡りの道念という君のようですが、我らはもはや町人となったので、再び切ったり張ったりする気はありません。ただあなた（頼朝）を世に出して差し上げたい存念です。されば我らの切ったり張ったりは、もぐさを切ったり蓋の紙を張ったりすることです。
英語訳
Gonbei had previously learned through a divine oracle from Inari that the young moxibustion seller was actually Lord Yoritomo. He thought to somehow secretly arrange meetings between him and the Hōjō princess, and eventually have him emerge into the world as Tokimasa's son-in-law. Conspiring with the lady-in-waiting Sekiya, he petitioned the chief retainer to have Dōi appointed to provide moxibustion for the princess's treatment.

Cut moxibustion is extremely useful medicinally, and moreover, the preparation method is exceptional.
[Chief Retainer]
What an unusual medical request. Shingozaemon also agrees. Tell that Dōi fellow immediately to bring plenty of cut moxibustion right away. That is indeed fortunate.
Gonbei came to the moxibustion shop and told Dōi in detail about Princess Masako's illness and being appointed to provide moxibustion services. For the first time, he revealed to Dōi everything up to how he learned through Inari's oracle that the young man was Lord Yoritomo. He suggested they should take advantage of this opportunity to work together and help Lord Yoritomo emerge into the world.
Moved by Gonbei's devotion, Dōi took out the white banner entrusted to him by Lord Yoritomo, showed it to Gonbei, and revealed his true intentions.

We are both originally from retainer families. Let us join hearts and serve with loyalty for the sake of our livelihood. Though I have abandoned bow and arrow in my current station, my heart remains sharp. Even a thousand awls, when thrust into thick bags, can immediately cut through - I have not forgotten the spirit of defeating the Taira, and I speak no lies. That is why I am a bookseller.
[Dōi]
This situation is like that of the monk Dōnen at Yaguchi crossing, but since we have now become townspeople, we have no intention of engaging in violence again. We simply wish to help you (Yoritomo) emerge into the world. Therefore, our "cutting and pasting" now means cutting moxibustion and pasting paper on containers.
