現代語訳
艶二郎は芝居を見て、とかく色男というものは打たれるものだと思い、しきりに打たれたくなり、島回りの気負いを一人前三両ずつで四、五人頼み、中の町の人が高い所で打たれるつもりで、茶屋の二階には藤兵衛を雇っておいてメリヤスを歌わせ、乱れた髪を浮名にすかせるつもりで、月代には青黛を塗り上げ、山地の銀出しでさっと水髪に結い、房を掴むとすぐにばらばらとほどけるようにして打たれたが、ついに打ち所が悪く気絶してしまい、髪を梳く所ではなく、「気付け薬よ、鍼よ」と騒いでようやく気がついた。この時、よっぽど馬鹿者だと言う浮名が少しばかり立った。
「その握り拳が三分ずつについている。少し痛くてもよいから、ずいぶん見栄えのよいようにお願いします。」
「切り落としからは罰が当たるという話だ。お前のようないい男がちらつくと女郎衆が艶っぽくなって仕方がないゆえ、俺ももう少し焼き餅の筋だというせりふは、こちらから注文して言わせるのだ。」
艶二郎は世間の噂を聞くに、金持ちゆえ皆欲で付き合うということを聞き、急に金持ちが嫌になり、どうぞ勘当を受けたいと思い、両親に願ったけれども、一人息子のことゆえ絶対にならないが、ようやく母の取りなしで七十五日間の勘当で日限が切れると早々に家へ引き取るとのことであった。

英語訳
En'nirō, after watching kabuki theater, thought that playboys were supposed to be beaten up, and desperately wanted to be beaten. He hired four or five tough men from the outer districts at three ryō each, intending to be beaten in a prominent place in Naka-no-chō. He employed Tōbei at the second floor of a teahouse to sing ballads, and planned to let his disheveled hair create romantic rumors. He painted his shaved pate with indigo dye and had his hair done up in mizugami style with silver ornaments from the mountain districts, arranged so that when someone grabbed his topknot, it would fall apart immediately. However, when he was actually beaten, he was struck in the wrong place and fainted. Instead of having his hair combed, there was a commotion with people calling for "smelling salts and acupuncture needles!" until he finally came to. This incident earned him quite a reputation as a fool.

"They say cutting off the topknot brings divine punishment. When a handsome man like you shows up, the courtesans get all flirtatious and it's unbearable, so the line about me being a bit jealous - that's something I'm ordering them to say."
En'nirō heard rumors that people only associated with him for his money because he was wealthy. Suddenly disgusted with being rich, he desperately wanted to be disowned and pleaded with his parents. However, since he was their only son, they absolutely refused. Finally, through his mother's mediation, they agreed to a seventy-five day disownment, after which he would be quickly brought back home.
