現代語訳
薬研堀にいる芸者七八人が縁二郎に雇われ、勘当が許されるようにと浅草の観音へ裸足参りをする。なるほど裸足参りというやつは大方は浮気なものである。
【芸者の台詞】
「ええ加減に殴って早く終わらせようよ。」
「十度参りくらいでいいのさ。」
【本文続き】
縁二郎は望み通り勘当を受けたけれども、母の方から化粧代は必要次第に送るので何も不足はない。しかし何か浮気な商売をしてみたく、色男のする商売は地紙売りだろうと、まだ夏も来ないのに地紙売りとして出かけ、一日歩いて大いに足に豆をこしらえ、これには懲り懲りとした。この時、大きな粋狂者だとよほど浮名が立った。
「おや」と鳥羽絵のような顔の人が通る。みんな来て、みんな背が高い。外を歩くと日に焼けるので謝る。困ったものだ。
まだ惚れたの何のという色男もうるさいぞ。
英語訳
Seven or eight geishas from Yagenbori were hired by Enjiro to make barefoot pilgrimages to Kannon at Asakusa, hoping his disinheritance would be forgiven. Indeed, those who make barefoot pilgrimages are generally frivolous people.

Enjiro received the disinheritance he desired, but since his mother sends makeup money whenever needed, he lacks nothing. However, wanting to try some frivolous trade, he thought that the business for a dandy would be selling paper, so even before summer came, he set out as a paper seller. After walking all day, he developed large blisters on his feet and was thoroughly fed up with it. At this time, he gained quite a reputation as a great eccentric.
"Oh my," says someone with a face like a Toba-e caricature as they pass by. Everyone comes, and they're all tall. When walking outside, one gets sunburned, so they apologize. What a troublesome thing.
Even the dandies going on about being in love and such are bothersome.
