現代語訳
縁二郎はいよいよ調子に乗ってきて、あれこれとするうちに七十五日の期限が切れ、家の方からは勘当を許さないと毎日催促される。しかし、まだ浮気をしていないので、親類中の取り成しで二十日の延期を願った。
「どうして、これほど浮気なものはあるまい」と、自分は命も捨てる気でいるが、それでは浮世らしくないので、嘘の心中のつもりで、先に来之助と相談しておき、「南無阿弥陀仏」というのを合図に止めさせる注文をして、まず浮名を千五百両で身請けして、心中の道具立てを買い集める。
最期の小袖の模様には、肩に金手籠、裾には錨を置いて、「老いても流れの身」という古歌の心を学んだものである。これも仲屋と山崎の儲けものである。

「二人が辞世の発句は摺り物にして中の町へ配らせる。花蘭が描いた蓮の絵を大奉書へ空摺りとは、いい思し召し付きだ。」
英語訳
Enjiro became increasingly carried away, and while doing this and that, the seventy-five day deadline expired. His family sent daily demands that they would not forgive his disinheritance. However, since he still hadn't had an affair, through the mediation of relatives, he requested a twenty-day extension.
"Surely there is no one as frivolous as this," he thought. Though he was prepared to throw away his life, that wouldn't be fitting for the floating world, so planning a fake love suicide, he first consulted with Kinosuke and arranged for them to stop him at the signal "Namu Amida Butsu" (Buddhist invocation). He then ransomed Ukina for 1,500 ryo and gathered the props for the love suicide.
The pattern on his final kimono had a golden hand-basket on the shoulder and an anchor at the hem, embodying the sentiment of the old poem "even in old age, a drifting life." This too was profitable for the tea house and Yamazaki.
