ここに百万両の分限者と呼ばれた商家の一人息子で、縁二郎という者がいた。年も十九、二十という頃であったが、貧乏の病は国にならず、他の病の中でも軽いものだと言われているものの、生まれつき風流で浮気なことを好んでいた。新内節の正本などを見て、玉木屋伊太八や浮世猪之介の身の上を羨ましく思い、「一生の思い出にこのような浮気な浮名の立つうちもあれば、いずれは命も捨てよう」という馬鹿らしいことを心がけ、命がけの思いつきをしたのであった。

英語訳
Here lived the only son of a merchant family called a millionaire, named Enjirō. He was around nineteen or twenty years old. While it's said that the disease of poverty doesn't affect the whole country and is among the lighter ailments, he was naturally inclined toward romantic pursuits and affairs. Reading the libretti of Shinuchi-bushi ballads, he envied the lives of characters like Tamakiya Itahachi and Ukiyo Inosuke, and had the foolish notion that "if I could have such romantic adventures and gain a reputation for affairs as a lifetime memory, I would eventually be willing to throw away my life." With this mindset, he came up with a life-or-death plan.
