縁二郎はまず彫り物が浮気の始まりだと考え、両腕から指の間まで、二、三十ほどあてもない彫り物をした。痛いのをこらえて、「これが男の甲斐性だ」と喜んだ。

縁二郎は薬師の家に美しい娘などが駆け込むのを浮気なことと裏山しく思い、近所の芸者お縁という踊り子を五十両で雇い、駆け込ませるつもりで、悪友の安に頼みに来た。

英語訳
Enjirō first thought that tattoos were the beginning of romantic affairs, so he got twenty or thirty random tattoos from both arms down to between his fingers. Enduring the pain, he rejoiced, saying "This is what makes a man!"

"The scattered ones in the middle mustn't be left incomplete, so let's apply more burns later."
Enjirō enviously thought it was romantic when beautiful daughters would take refuge in physicians' homes. He hired a local geisha named O-En, a dancer, for fifty ryō, intending to have her stage such a refuge scene, and came to ask his bad friend An for help.
