現代語訳
家内の下女たちも覗き見て、「おらが若旦那に惚れるとは、千家か、古流か、遠州か、知らないが、とんだ茶人だ」とささやく。
「♪水からと申すのも、そもそも頼るべき人も定まらぬ頃、人妻となって、この新道に住み慣れて人の心を浮気にする」という白拍子でございます。かやば町の薬師で、こちらの縁二郎さんを植え木の陰から見初めました。女房にすることができなければ、お飯なども絶って死にたいのです。それもだめだとおっしゃるなら、死ぬ覚悟でございます」などと、注文通りのせりふを並べ立てる。
「はて、色男というものはどんなことで難儀をするものかわからないものだぞ。もう十両やるから、もう少し大きな声で、隣あたりへ聞こえるように頼む」
縁二郎の父親の弥二衛門は、頼んだことは知らず、気の毒に思い、いろいろと意見して帰らせた。

"♪Starting from nothing, having no one to rely upon in those days, I became someone's wife and grew accustomed to living in this new district, making people's hearts unfaithful" - this is in the style of a shirayōshi dancer. I am from the physician's house in Kayaba-chō, and I fell in love with your Enjirō at first sight from behind the planted trees. If I cannot become his wife, I would rather stop eating and die. If you say that's impossible too, I am prepared to die." She delivers such lines exactly as ordered.
"Well, who knows what kind of troubles a ladies' man faces! I'll give you another ten ryō, so please speak a bit louder so the neighbors can hear."
Enjirō's father, Yazaemon, unaware that this was arranged, felt sorry for her and gave her various advice before sending her away.
