現代語訳
縁二郎は家の桜を思い出し、帰る際に付けられた犬桜のような、節の蕾がほころびた袖を、禿が力草として引かれて行くのか、後ろ髪を心強くも切り、「やっと」という文句以外の他の客人が捕まるのを羨ましく思い、何でもないのに新造や禿を頼み込んで、こちらから大門に付けていて、捕まりはしたが、位は必ず裂けても大丈夫だという約束で、引きずられて行く。
【縁二郎の台詞】
「これ、話してくれよ。こう引きずられて行く所は恥ずかしいことだ。生まれてから初めて嫉妬されてみる、どうも言えない心持ちだ。」
【新造と禿たち】
新造や禿は人形をもらう約束で、むだなことを言いながら引きずって行く。
【本文】
縁二郎が五、六日ぶりに家へ帰ってくると、待ち受けていた妾が、ここぞ報復の時だと前もって企んでおいた存分を焼きかける。
「本当に男というものはなぜそんなに気が強いものなのでしょうね。それほどに惚れられるのが嫌なら、そんないい男に生まれつかなければいいのです。また女郎も女郎です、人の大事な男を止めて行きなさって。またあなたさんもあなたさんです、愛想を尽かしたのがいいのですと気づく限りしなさって。」
【妾の台詞】
「この後は八丈と島ちりめんが着てのことですよ。」
【縁二郎の台詞】
「もう少し焼いてくれたら、お前が欲しがった八丈と島ちりめんを買ってやろう。」
英語訳
Enjirō recalls the cherry blossoms at home, and like the wild cherry blossoms that clung to him on his return journey, with sleeves like budding nodes beginning to bloom, he is dragged away by the kamuro (child attendants) like pulling weeds, his hair pulled from behind. With his heart strengthened, he cuts it saying "finally," and envies other customers who get caught up in such situations. For no particular reason, he requests the shinzō (apprentice courtesans) and kamuro to escort him to the Great Gate, and though he gets caught, with the promise that even if his status is torn, it will be fine, he is dragged away.
【Enjirō's dialogue】
"Hey, let me go! Being dragged around like this is embarrassing. This is the first time in my life I've experienced jealousy - it's an indescribable feeling."
【The shinzō and kamuro】
The shinzō and kamuro drag him along, chattering uselessly, with the promise of receiving dolls.
【Main text】
When Enjirō returns home after five or six days, his mistress, who had been waiting for him, thinking this is the perfect time for revenge, unleashes all the resentment she had been plotting.
"Really, why are men such strong-willed creatures? If you hate being so beloved, then you shouldn't have been born such a handsome man! And those courtesans too - taking away someone else's precious man! And you too - acting like it's good to lose interest and realizing such things!"

"After this, it's all about wearing Hachijō silk and island crepe!"
【Enjirō's dialogue】
"If you get a little more jealous, I'll buy you that Hachijō silk and island crepe you wanted."
