現代語訳
義経の弟子はもとより、そのほか剣術を学ぶ者、観音の額を見て、とかく剣術は先生牛若丸と言った、豊後国の橋にて千人斬りをいたされたごとく、
大勢斬らねば上手にはならぬとも、人を斬っては
後難の避け難しと毎晩、五条の橋、柳の葉辻々、小路々へ出て、天気のよい夜に高足駄を履き、日の丸の扇を持ち、木立あるいは品川、王来の人を千人打ちをぞしたりける。
「いやへんたらこ、これで九百九十九人目だ。もう一人で一千人打ちの御暇乞いだ」

英語訳
Not only the disciples of Yoshitsune, but others learning swordsmanship as well, upon seeing the votive tablet at Kannon, would say that swordsmanship ultimately comes from Master Ushiwakamaru, who performed the thousand-man slaying at the bridge in Bungo Province.
Though one cannot become skilled without cutting down many people, killing people brings unavoidable future troubles. So every evening, they would go out to Gojo Bridge, Yanagi-no-ha intersections, and various small streets. On fine weather nights, wearing high geta and carrying fans with the rising sun design, they would practice "thousand-man striking" on people near groves of trees or from Shinagawa and Orai.
"Well, hentarako! This makes nine hundred ninety-nine people. Just one more and I can take my leave after completing the thousand-man striking!"
