馬を稽古するものは小栗判官、鬼鹿毛の馬を乗りしを、駆け馬を乗りたると聞き違え、その上弟子同士、木馬になっては日頃気合いを知っているので面白くなし。いかさま見ず知らずの者を乗ったらば、いろいろの口向きがあるべしと、北野の天神の境内、あるいは吉町へ
馬道具を持ち行き、駆け馬を上げて馬の稽古をする。

英語訳
Those who practice horsemanship, having heard about Oguri Hangan riding the demon-black horse, mistakenly think it means practicing racing horses. Moreover, since fellow disciples know each other's temperament from daily practice when using wooden horses, it becomes uninteresting. They think that if they were to "ride" strangers they don't know, there would be various interesting reactions, so they go to the grounds of Kitano Tenjin shrine or to Yoshicho district.
They bring horse equipment and set up racing horses to practice horsemanship.
