現代語訳
上様お一人のお考えにより、弓馬剣術が天下一統にことのほか流行し、その上、延喜帝の寛大により抜き捨て僧服になり給ったよしを聞き、我も我もと僧服になり、空教天上人と茶色木綿の仏先直し、それより以下は茶色の仏先羽織にて、おのおの弓を持たせ、配下の侍や丁家の古道具屋にある兜の大鉢、瀬戸物屋にある兜鉢、なんでも鉢となの付いたもの、固いものでさえあれば観音の額のように射抜いて見ようと、いきなりにこそ射砕いたのである。

英語訳
By the will of His Lordship alone, archery, horsemanship, and swordsmanship became extremely popular throughout the unified realm. Moreover, having heard that through the benevolence of Emperor Engi, people were allowed to wear monk's robes after casting aside their swords, everyone began wearing monk's robes - from Kukyo Tensho-jin in brown cotton Buddhist attire down to those below in brown Buddhist haori coats. Each carried a bow, and they would shoot and shatter anything hard with a "bowl" or "helmet" in its name - whether it be large helmet bowls from retainers' houses or antique shops, helmet bowls from pottery shops, anything at all - hoping to pierce through them like the votive tablet at Kannon temple.

"There's nothing to make a fuss about! If you complain about this and that, we'll shoot through the shopkeeper's head!"
"If you won't show us the pottery, well then..."
