現代語訳
義経は「後世に剣術指南をするが、その身は鞍馬の僧正が谷で天狗より授かった剣術であるから、さしあたり打太刀は天狗でなければできない。しかし急に天狗も呼べないので、打太刀の者に天狗の面を被せ、凧のように羽をつけ、そばから大団扇で扇ぎ上げさせ、宙を飛びながら打太刀をする。仕太刀の人は高下駄を履き、片手には日の丸の扇を持ち、片手で切り合う」と言った。

延喜帝が閑夜に八丈八反の御衣を脱ぎ捨て粗服になられてから、公卿・殿上人その他諸人に至るまで、大通し長羽織をさっぱりやめて、鳶色木綿の仏崎羽織を着用するようになった。よって末の世まで延喜寛暦の御代と、清貧の例として引くのである。

Yoshitsune said: "For teaching swordsmanship to future generations, since my techniques were received from tengu at Kurama's Sojo Valley, the uchitachi (senior partner in sword practice) must necessarily be a tengu. However, since we cannot suddenly summon tengu, we will have the uchitachi person wear a tengu mask, attach wings like a kite, and have people fan them up with large fans from the sides so they can perform uchitachi while flying in the air. The shitachi (junior partner) will wear high geta, hold a rising sun fan in one hand, and fight with the other hand."

Since Emperor Engi cast off his eight-tan Hachijo silk robes and donned plain clothes during a quiet night, from court nobles and courtiers down to all other people, they completely stopped wearing long haori coats and began wearing kite-colored cotton Butsuzaki haori instead. Therefore, this became an example of noble poverty cited as the reign of Engi-Kanryaku until the end of times.
