現代語訳
小栗判官兼氏は「桶」という悪馬に乗った名人であるから、門人に教える際も、木馬では鞍の味わいや釣り合いが分からないので、人を木馬にして乗れば互いにその意味を飲み込むことが早いとして、先生と門人が互いに木馬の代わりになって、乗ったり乗られたりして稽古をする。

英語訳
Oguri Hangan Kanetoshi was a master horseman who rode a wicked horse called "Oke" (bucket), so when teaching his disciples, since wooden horses cannot convey the true feel and balance of the saddle, he has people serve as wooden horses. This way, both parties can quickly grasp the meaning. The master and disciples take turns being the wooden horse, with one riding and the other being ridden for practice.
