鎮西八郎の門人は非常に大勢になり、中でも海野太郎の一子小太郎は、生年七歳で南蛮鉄の兜を射抜いたので、あまりにも珍しいことだとして、その弓矢を額にして清水の観音へ奉納した。

義経と小栗判官の門人がこれを聞いて、負けじ競争になり、義経の門人は五条の橋にて千人斬りの額を、小栗の門人はかの古法剣に馬を駆けさせて額を奉納した。この三枚の内で、馬の額は絵描きの手からばかり見えて、さりとは損な奉納である。

The disciples of Chinzei Hachiro (Minamoto no Tametomo) grew greatly in number, and among them, Kotaro, the son of Unno Taro, shot through a Nanban iron helmet at the age of seven. Since this was such an extraordinary feat, they made a votive tablet of his bow and arrow and dedicated it to Kannon at Kiyomizu.

The disciples of Yoshitsune and Oguri Hangan heard this and it became a rivalry. Yoshitsune's disciples dedicated a tablet of "slaying a thousand men" at Gojo Bridge, while Oguri's disciples made horses gallop in the old martial style and dedicated their tablet. Among these three tablets, the horse tablet can only be seen from the painter's technique, which makes it rather a poor dedication.
