たてゝ三日ばかり入ておいたらまつひら
御免といふはしれた事花の下（もと）にて死
たひといふた西行（さひぎやう）も飛鳥（あすか）山に居つゞけ
をさせたらばかならず欠伸（あくび）をするなる
べしされば久米仙人（くめのせんにん）も女湯（をんなゆ）の番人に
したら素骹（はきのしろき）に通（つう）をもうしなふまじく
弓削某（ゆげのなにがし）とても女護島（にようごのしま）へながしたら
たちまちおいとま申べしどれほどに美（うつ）
麗ても朝夕眼前にぶらついて居て
はこのましからす女郎買も命から二番
目の大切な金銀を出し其くせゆき
ところを都合と工面で饅茹（ぬた）にした
首尾をもとめ主親（しうおや）の四つの眼をはし
めとして人目をしのびて通（かよ）へばこそ
おもしろくもあつたもの一 升買（しやうがい）の足（た）る
をしらず心のまゝに樽酒のたのしみ
現代語訳
（剣菱の酒で据え風呂を）三日ほど立てて入れておいたなら、「まったくご免こうむります」と言うのは知れたこと。花の下で死にたいと言っていた西行も、飛鳥山に居続けをさせたならば、必ずあくびをするに違いない。されば久米仙人も女湯の番人にしたなら、白いすねに通（つう）をも失うまじく、弓削某とても女護島へ流したら、たちまち「おいとま申します」と言うであろう。どれほどに美麗でも、朝夕目の前にうろついていては好ましくない。女郎買いも、命の次に大切な金銀を出し、そのくせ行くところを都合と工面で何とかやりくりし、首尾を求め、主人や親の四つの目をはじめとして、人目を忍んで通えばこそ面白くもあったもの。一升買いで足るを知らず、心のままに樽酒の楽しみ（を得ようとするのは）

(If one were to set up a hot bath with Kenbishī sake and) left it steeping for about three days, it's obvious that even the most devoted drinker would say "Please, no more, I've had quite enough." Similarly, Saigyō, who once declared he wished to die beneath the cherry blossoms, would surely let out a yawn if made to sit continuously at Asukayama. Likewise, if Kume the Immortal were made a guard at the women's bathhouse, he would surely not lose his refined sensibility (*tsū*) at the sight of white shins; and even Yuge So-and-so, if exiled to the Island of Women, would promptly say "I beg to take my leave." No matter how beautiful a woman may be, if she is constantly loitering before one's eyes morning and evening, she becomes undesirable. The pleasure of visiting courtesans lies precisely in the fact that one must spend money — the most precious thing next to life itself — and yet, despite that, must scheme and contrive to arrange the visit, seek a favorable outcome, and slip away unseen past the four watchful eyes of master and parents, stealing past all prying gazes.
