現代語訳
万吉はだいぶ鼻が低くなったけれども、まだ高慢な心が少し見えたので、小天狗たちが出てきて、神道・儒教・仏教のことをみな口元のところで問いかけた。ところが一つとして明確な答えがなく、つまらないことばかり言って大いに行き詰まったので、大天狗は扇で鼻の先を撫でた。この時、鼻は非常に低くなった。
【大天狗の台詞】
「そちのように人を侮ると、人に侮られるものだ。人は必ず自分を侮って、その後に人がこれを侮るということがある。何し、この理をしっているか」
【万吉の台詞】
「それは真相の水揚げのことさ。神・主・仏の論には負けても、からかいの意気地は我らに続く者なしと口惜しく思い、泣く泣く我と一座して女郎を買い給え、さえ比べ仕ろうと、まだ高慢を申すのである」
英語訳
Although Mankichi's nose had become considerably lower, a little arrogant spirit could still be seen in him. So the small tengus came forward and questioned him about Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism at his mouth area. However, he gave no clear answers to any of the questions, saying only foolish things and becoming greatly stuck. So the great tengu stroked the tip of his nose with a fan, and this time his nose became extremely low.
【Great tengu's dialogue】
"When you despise people as you do, you will be despised by people. People inevitably first despise themselves, and then others come to despise them. Do you know this principle?"
【Mankichi's dialogue】
"That's about the true nature of mizuage. Even though I lost in discussions about gods, lords, and Buddha, I thought regretfully that no one could match our spirit for teasing. Crying, I still arrogantly propose that we sit together and compete in buying courtesans."
