現代語訳
昔、鎌倉の前の時代に、上野屋万右衛門という武芸者がいた。立派な人物になったある春の頃、玉のように美しい男の子を授かり、万吉と名付けて大切に育てた。この子は生まれつき大変美しかったが、一つの欠点があった。鼻が低いことで、まるで碁石を一目付けたようであった。夫婦は特にそれを気にして、大山不動、石尊大権現、大天狗、小天狗に祈願をかけ、鼻が高くなるようにと願った。
【万右衛門夫婦の台詞】
「どうか万吉の鼻が高くなって立派になりますように」
あれこれと工夫を巡らせて、「人は傲慢になれば鼻が高くなるものだから、この子をできるだけ傲慢に育てよう。我が家にこれほど素晴らしい子はいないだろう」と考えて、そのようにしつけよと奥方をはじめ番頭や手代に言い渡した。

Long ago, before the Kamakura period, there was a martial artist named Banya Manemon in Ueno. Having become a respectable man, one spring he was blessed with a son as beautiful as a jewel, whom he named Mankichi and raised with great care. This child was exceptionally beautiful by nature, but had one flaw: his nose was so low it looked like a single go stone had been placed on his face. The couple was particularly troubled by this and made offerings to Oyama Fudo, Sekison Daigongen, the great tengu, and small tengu, praying that his nose would become higher.

"Please let Mankichi's nose grow tall so he may become distinguished"
Devising various schemes, they thought, "People's noses grow tall when they become arrogant, so let us raise this child to be as arrogant as possible. Surely there is no child as wonderful as ours in our household," and instructed his wife, chief clerk, and shop assistants to raise him in this manner.
