現代語訳
万吉は九歳から手習いを始め、書道も稽古したが、実際は非常に不器用だった。しかし家族はもちろんのこと、近所の人々にも付け届け（贈り物）をして褒めさせたので、皆が万吉の筆跡や文章に並ぶものはないと褒めちぎった。
【父・万右衛門の台詞】
「この年齢で、息子ほど書が上手な者はいないでしょう。なかなか良い字を書いております」
【客人１の台詞】
「ご書道がおできになるとは。それならばお書きになった時は、生きているうちにまた拝見させていただきましょう」
【万吉の台詞】
「これは不出来さ」（謙遜して）
【客人２の台詞】
「異国の王羲之や、我が朝の藤原行成も及ばない上手さだと申しましょうか」

万吉を褒める者には御馳走をして金銭なども与えたので、物をもらえることなので、口に任せてやたらと無性に褒めて褒め抜いた。
この時万吉は十歳で、また鼻が随分高くなった。

From the age of nine, Mankichi began learning calligraphy and practiced writing, but he was actually very clumsy. However, his family and even the neighbors were given gifts to make them praise him, so everyone praised his handwriting and compositions as having no equal.

Those who praised Mankichi were treated to feasts and given money, so since they could receive things, they let their tongues run free and praised him excessively and endlessly.
