現代語訳
万吉はこのように学問で高慢になって無性に高く止まっていたが、十七歳にして「心の欲する所に従って礼を越えず」という気取りで、学問もやめてそろそろ色事を稼ぎけり。二十歳になると、非常に良い男になったけれど、少し気になるのは鼻が高すぎるという男になった。田舎育ちで持ち上てる太鼓持ちや無性に煽て上げて高慢を一倍にさせ、女郎の金を掴み取りにする事なので、吉原一番の大尽様と大評判で持てる事限りなく、中の町は言うに及ばず。

Mankichi had become so arrogant about his learning and was acting extremely haughty, but at seventeen, putting on airs about "following one's heart's desire without transgressing propriety," he quit his studies and gradually began pursuing affairs with women. When he turned twenty, he had become a very handsome man, but the slightly concerning thing was that he had become a man whose nose was too high. With country-bred flatterers and others who excessively praised him, making his arrogance twice as strong, and since he grabbed money to spend on courtesans, he had an unlimited reputation as the greatest patron in Yoshiwara, not only in Naka-no-cho but everywhere.
