うろこを□に出しうろこやを
頼（たの）み□□そくめつとやうかしたり
そも〳〵この三つうろこは北条（ほうでう）の
大殿様まだおわかい時分 江島（ゑのしま）の
弁天の開帳（かいてう）の時 北条（ほうてう）の北（ほう）の字
のてうちんにて朝参りをなされ
しにさすがべん才天（さいてん）は女体（によたい）にて
くうまぎれの水茶屋へ御 出現（しゆつげん）
まし〳〵ちよんの間の出合（であひ）の折
から起請（きせい）せいしの神（かみ）かけて爪（つめ）の
かはりにこけをへがしあたへ給ひし
三ツうろことかやかゝる大切（たいせつ）の代物（しろもの）
でも七（なゝ）ツ屋が手にわたり八ヶ月
のなはめに及びしが去年（きよねん）の夏（なつ）
の洪水（こうすい）が月切にて利根（とね）川の利上（りあげ）
もみきまさり番頭殿のきれ文（ぶみ）
にてむざんやうろこはながれにけり
此事 殿（との）へもれきこえ源左衛門は
もとの浪人（らうにん）うろこやはお出入
とまり魚鳥留（きよてうどめ）の門前を肴売（さかなう ）
が通（と）ふるやうで一 向（かう）はしまらす
何とぞ三ツ鱗（うろこ）のゆくえをたづね
ふたゝびおやしきの御用をたしもと
のごとくの分限（ふげん）とならんと思へ
ども質（しち）のながれと人のゆくゑ
たとへゆくゑがしれたればとて
うけもどすべき金（かね）はなし近年（きんねん）
は無間（むけん）の鐘（かね）もつきてがふえてこゝに
三ヶ所な（しよ）かしこに五ヶ所（しよ）水いなりは
わりかわるいの第（だい）六 天（てん）はかすりだの

現代語訳
鱗を質に出し、鱗屋を
頼み、即座に没落するようになったのである。
そもそもこの三つ鱗は北条の
大殿様がまだお若い時分、江島の
弁天の開帳の時、北条の北の字の
提灯にて朝参りをなされた
のに、さすが弁才天は女体にて
空腹凌ぎの水茶屋へご出現
なさり、ちょいとした逢引の折
から起請文の神に掛けて爪の
代わりにこれを削がしお与えくださった
三つ鱗とか。このような大切な代物
でも質屋の手に渡り八ヶ月
の縄目に及んだが、去年の夏
の洪水が月切れにて利根川の利上げ
も効き目がなく、番頭殿の切れ文
にて無残や鱗は流れてしまった。
この事が殿にも漏れ聞こえ、源左衛門は
元の浪人、鱗屋はお出入り
停止。魚鳥留めの門前を魚売りが
通るようで一向に締まらず。
何とぞ三つ鱗の行方を尋ね
再びお屋敷の御用を果たし、元
のごとくの分限者となろうと思え
ども、質の流れと人の行方。
たとえ行方が知れたとしても
受け戻すべき金はなし。近年
は無間の鐘も撞き手が増えて、ここに
三ヶ所、かしこに五ヶ所。水稲荷は
割に悪いの、第六天は掠りだの
英語訳
He pawned the scales, relying on Urokoya,
and immediately fell into ruin.
Originally, these three scales belonged to the Hōjō
great lord when he was still young. During the opening ceremony of Enoshima's
Benzaiten temple, he made morning worship carrying
a lantern with the character "hō" from Hōjō.
As expected, Benzaiten, being of female form,
appeared at a humble tea stall to satisfy her hunger.
During a brief romantic encounter,
she scraped these off in place of fingernails and bestowed them
as sacred pledges to the gods—
these three scales. Even such precious items
ended up in a pawnshop's hands for eight months
under bond, but last summer's
flood coincided with the due date, and even the interest rate increases from the Tone River
were ineffective. Through the manager's final notice,
alas, the scales were swept away in the current.
When this matter reached the lord's ears, Genzaemon was
reduced to his former rōnin status, and Urokoya was banned
from doing business. Like fish vendors passing
before the gates where fishing and fowling are prohibited,
it was utterly undisciplined.
Somehow he hoped to find the whereabouts of the three scales
and once again serve the mansion's needs,
returning to his former status as a wealthy man.
But both pawned items swept away and people's whereabouts—
even if their location were known,
there was no money to redeem them. In recent years,
even the bell of Muken has more people to ring it, here
three places, there five places. Mizu-Inari brings
bad luck proportionally, while Dairoku-ten only brings near misses.
